Gary Bowerman is Director of Check-in Asia, a travel consulting and consumer research firm specialising in China and South East Asia. He is the Asia Travel Analyst for Phocuswright, and an Asia Consumer Trends Analyst for Mintel. A regular speaker at international travel conferences, Gary is frequently invited by global media, including CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, Bloomberg, Time, SCMP, China Daily and Caixin, to comment on Chinese and Asian tourism trends and developments. He is co-host of The South East Asia Travel Show, and founder of the Asia Travel Re:Set newsletter. In 2014, Gary authored the book, The New Chinese Traveler: Business Opportunities from the Chinese Travel Revolution (Palgrave). In 2023, he authored the 2022-2026 China Travel Market Report for Phocuswright, and the forthcoming book The Return of Chinese Tourism (Routledge, 2024). A former editor of the Shanghai Business Review, Gary lived and worked in Shanghai from 2004-2010. He has been based in Kuala Lumpur since 2010.
