In recent years, Macao's tourism products have steadily diversified and the visitor structure has also gradually changed. The number of overnight stay visitors has increased from 10.6 million in 2008 to 17.2 million in 2017, an increase of 62.6%. In addition, the proportion of overnight stay visitors rose from 46.3% in 2008 to 52.9% in 2017.

With the development of the tourism industry, the total visitor expenditure increased from MOP 106.8 billion in 2008 to MOP 285.5 billion in 2017, an increase of nearly two times in ten years. Moreover, Macao's tourism performance has gained worldwide recognition, according to the World Tourism Organization, in 2017, Macao ranked third in terms of tourism receipts and ranked sixth in terms of International tourist arrivals in the Asia and Pacific region.

In order to achieve the tourism development goal in building Macao into a “World Centre of Tourism and Leisure”, the action plan is to follow the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area” Development Plan Outline, grasp the opportunities brought by the Macao SAR Government’s active participation in the “Belt and Road Initiative”; as well as to follow the “Macao Special Administrative Region Five-Year Development Plan (2016-2020)” and the “Macao Tourism Industry Development Master Plan”.
